Commentary: Once again, this was a deep year for movies. Julian Schnabel managed a directing nod for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and many predicted it making the top 5. Ratatouille was probably the best reviewed film of the year, and would have easily grabbed a spot as the token animated film. In order to try to boost viewership, I think they would have honored The Bourne Ultimatum which managed three surprise wins, and must have been well-liked. Sweeney Todd managed a Golden Globe win, and in my opinion, got the shaft that year. It was stylish, and it would have been a chance to finally honor a Tim Burton film. I think the final spot would have gone to the under-appreciated Into the Wild, although, American Gangster managed the same amount of nominations, so it was a close call.
