Always an interesting set of nominations, and looking at them, I can't help but think after several years of lining up a bit too closely to Oscar, this year I think there might be some differences. For example, the interesting misses of Michelle Williams and Kenneth Lonergan (for directing), Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Jeff Bridges, and Loving and Hell or High Water for Best Feature feel like they are anomalies that will soon be corrected. Or will they? Will American Honey emerge as more than an Indie Spirits favorite or be this year's Tangerine? Then there are other, less-Oscary snubs like Rebecca Hall, Sally Field, Closet Monster, Maggie's Plan, and Adam Driver. Overall though, this is an incredible set of nominees, and like I said, I think this may be the year this ceremony returns to being the Oscar alternative. Although Moonlight, Manchester By the Sea, and Jackie could prove me wrong.
