2015 Grammy Predictions - Album of the Year

Will Win - Beyonce "Beyonce"

Should Win - Beyonce "Beyonce"

Could Win - Beck "Morning Phase" or Beck "Morning Phase"

Commentary - Sam Smith could sweep all four categories, and while it would not be their worst choice, I do hope, and I truly think that they are going to go their own way on Album of the Year. Smith is clearly talented and Stay With Me is a smash hit, but the album as a whole was a bit of a disappointed. Rock artists have always done well in general categories when nominated, and I think that Beck is the real dark horse. Plus he has been cranking out great album after great album for a long time without taking this top prize. Overdue definitely comes to mind. Although one could also argue that Beyonce is also overdue. She too has been cranking out great album after another, selling millions of records, and only gotten one general award (Song of the Year for Single Ladies). Her self-titled album got a lot of buzz after its surprise release. But once the dust settled, it also managed to have some of the best reviews of the year, sell a ton of albums, and continue to prove that no one has the power of the Queen B. I think she wins this award here. Her lack of Song or Record of the Year nods is a bit disconcerting, but we have seen plenty of albums win without either.

2015 Grammy Predictions - Record of the Year

Will Win - Sam Smith "Stay With Me"

Could Win - Sia "Chandelier" or Taylor Swift "Shake it Off"

Should Win - Sia "Chandelier"

Commentary - Sia's Chandelier is easily the best radio hit of the year. It is a soaring pop ballad that has both flash and substance. I think it could pull off a win here. And Taylor Swift should never be discounted. While flashy and upbeat pop hits have never done well here (compared to the softer and darker work from Sia and Sam Smith), she is Taylor Swift and her song is infectious (literally I wish I could get it out of my head!). But I think that Sam Smith is practically unstoppable in most of these categories, particularly anything involving Sam Smith, and particularly anything involving Stay With Me. The album as a whole was a bit disappointing, but Stay With Me was a fantastic record, is beloved by so many, and I think it becomes this year's Record of the Year.

2015 Grammy Predictions - Song of the Year

Will Win - Sam Smith "Stay With Me"

Could Win - Sia "Chandelier" or Hozier "Take Me to Church"

Should Win - Sia "Chandelier"

Commentary - In terms of song writing Sia's Chandelier and Hozier's Take Me to Church are real standouts. Their lyrics have the most impact and the deepest of the bunch, and both still remain popular top hits at the same time. Great lyrics that still remain accessible is the exact formula that Grammy voters should be rewarding here. But instead, I think the Sam Smith train has definitely left the station. He could easily steamroll this and record, as well as the pop categories. The only category where he may falter is in Album of the Year, but here, he should reign supreme.

2015 Grammy Predictions - Best New Artist

Will Win - Sam Smith

Should Win - Sam Smith

Could Win - Bastille, Brandy Clark, or Iggy Azalea

Commentary - Bastille had a huge hit in Pompeii and Brandy Clark is a hot new country star who is on the rise. But this looks like a battle between two huge new superstars who both have tons of nominations across the general categories. Iggy Azalea is rap's newest starlet, and has done what recent female rappers, including Nicki Minaj, were not able to do, by getting a Record of the Year and Best New Artist nominations. But I don't think anybody can beat Sam Smith. He looks to have a huge night across the Pop and General categories, and honestly, of the bunch, no new artist has made quite the impact on music as Smith has.
