2023 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Drama Categories

Best Drama Series
Andor
Better Call Saul
The Crown
House of the Dragon
The Last of Us
Succession
The White Lotus
Yellowjackets

Other Contenders - The Handmaid's Tale, The Mandalorian, Bad Sisters, Yellowstone, The Old Man, The Boys, The Diplomat

Commentary - Six feel pretty safe. Better Call Saul, The Crown, and Succession are favorites for many seasons, and I don't see why that love would suddenly change. The Last of Us and House of the Dragon were such massive hits, and have the HBO Emmy machine behind them. Finally, The White Lotus seems poised to make the jump to Drama an easy landing. Part of me wants to lean in to two old favorites, The Handmaid's Tale and The Mandalorian. I really hope that Emmy voters are not that lazy, and instead go for Star Wars' new and better property Andor, and the fantastic second season of Yellowjackets. They could also embrace Bad Sisters, Yellowstone, The Old Man, The Boys, or Netflix's The Diplomat.

Best Actor in a Drama Series
Paddy Considine "House of the Dragon"
Brian Cox "Succession"
Kieran Culkin "Succession"
Bob Odenkirk "Better Call Saul"
Pedro Pascal "The Last of Us"
Jeremy Strong "The Last of Us"

Other Contenders - Jeff Bridges "The Old Man", Diego Luna "Andor", Harrison Ford "1923", Kevin Costner "Yellowstone", Matthew Rhys "Perry Mason"

Commentary - I feel like five slots are good to go. The three Succession guys look to dominate, and Bob Odenkirk might finally win an Emmy for Better Call Saul. I also think that after all these years of missing out for The Mandalorian, that he will finally get in for The Last of Us. I am conflicted with this final slot. A lot of folks are banking on the names of Jeff Bridges and Harrison Ford. I am just not sold, especially when there are Best Drama Series contenders sitting there. When Game of Thrones was at its peak, it was a huge hit among the actors, and the Star Wars properties have never been huge with that voting bloc. I am going with Paddy Considine over Diego Luna, with Bridges, Ford, Rhys, and Costner as potential spoilers.

Best Actress in a Drama Series
Emma D'Arcy "House of the Dragon"
Sharon Horgan "Bad Sisters"
Melanie Lynskey "Yellowjackets"
Bella Ramsey "The Last of Us"
Sarah Snook "Succession"
Imelda Staunton "The Crown"

Other Contenders - Elisabeth Moss "The Handmaid's Tale", Helen Mirren "1923", Keri Russell "The Diplomat", Juliette Lewis "Yellowjackets", Kelly Reilly "Yellowstone"

Commentary - This race feels more influx than its Actor counterpart. Sarah Snook's jump to lead may end up being the best move she can make. She feels like the current leader. I also feel like Melanie Lynskey is locked and could challenge Snook for the win. Bella Ramsey should ride The Last of Us Wave, and Imelda Staunton, despite a muted reaction should continue the streak of The Queens dominating this category. The last two slots are way up in the air. Elisabeth Moss is probably getting a slot, but I am hoping that voters move on to other deserving contenders. Helen Mirren is a classic Emmy favorite, so don't be surprised if she is announced. But I am going with Emma D'Arcy (same reasoning as Considine about), and Sharon Horgan, who I feel like is a real sleeper, as is her show. Also watch out for Kelly Reilly, Keri Russell, Juliette Lewis.

Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
F. Murray Abraham "The White Lotus"
Nicholas Braun "Succession"
Giancarlo Esposito "Better Call Saul"
Matthew Macfadyen "Succession"
Jonathan Pryce "The Crown"
Alan Ruck "Succession"
Alexander Skarsgard "Succession"
Matt Smith "House of the Dragon"

Other Contenders - John Lithgow "Perry Mason", Jonathan Banks "Better Call Saul", Will Sharpe "The White Lotus", Theo James "The White Lotus", Elijah Wood "Yellowjackets", Adam DiMarco "The White Lotus", Michael Imperioli "The White Lotus"

Commentary - The White Lotus may have dominated in the Limited Series categories, but expect it to not do as well up against the Drama favorites. For example, I still think Succession is going to dominate this with four slots, this year adding in Ruck for Culkin and Skarsgard, a previous winner. Giancarlo Esposito also feels solid. I would also not bet against recent favorite Matt Smith for House of the Dragon. I do think that, if recent news hasn't dissuaded voters, F. Murray Abraham will get a slot for The White Lotus. In the last slot, I am going with Jonathan Pryce. He is a legend, and I just don't think voters are ready to give up on The Crown. John Lithgow and Johnathan Banks are previous nominees/winners, and Elijah Wood has a great role in Yellowjackets. Also, there is a huge possibility that The White Lotus surprises me again, so don't discount Sharpe, James, DiMarco, or Imperioli.

Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Jennifer Coolidge "The White Lotus"
Meghann Fagy "The White Lotus"
Elizabeth Debicki "The Crown"
Lesley Manville "The Crown"
Aubrey Plaza "The White Lotus"
Christina Ricci "Yellowjackets"
Rhea Seehorn "Better Call Saul"
J. Smith-Cameron "Succession"

Other Contenders - Carol Burnett "Better Call Saul", Justine Lupe "Succession", Olivia Cooke "House of the Dragon", Milly Alcock "House of the Dragon", Ann Dowd "The Handmaid's Tale", Yvonne Strahovski "The Handmaid's Tale", Haley Lu Richardson "The White Lotus", Anne-Marie Duff "Bad Sisters"

Commentary - Without all the Succession competition, I think The White Lotus will fare better here. Obviously Jennifer Coolidge is in, but I also think Aubrey Plaza and Meghann Fagy will join her. Of course J. Smith-Cameron, Rhea Seehorn, and Christina Ricci are strong contenders after their nominations last year. I think they repeat. In the last two slots, I am going with the two Crown actresses. Both are big names, both are the two best things of an otherwise lacking season, and I think voters will still want to reward the show. But that leaves Carol Burnett out, who has missed out in Guest for this show before. I would also watch out for the other White Lotus actors, The Handmaid's Tale actresses who were previous nominees/winners, and the contenders from House of the Dragon.

Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Murray Bartlett "The Last of Us"
Bryan Cranston "Better Call Saul"
James Cromwell "Succession"
Arian Moayed "Succession"
Nick Offerman "The Last of Us"
Aaron Paul "Better Call Sual"

Other Contenders - Andy Serkis "Andor", Giancarlo Esposito "The Mandalorian", Jon Gries "The White Lotus", Justin Kirk "Succession", Gabriel Luna "The Last of Us", Lamar Jackson "The Last of Us", Michael McKean "Better Call Saul"

Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Hiam Abbass "Succession"
Hope Davis "Succession"
Cherry Jones "Succession"
Melanie Lynskey "The Last of Us"
Anna Torv "The Last of Us"
Hariett Walter "Succession"

Other Contenders - Fiona Shaw "Andor", Betsy Brandt "Better Call Saul", Claire Foy "The Crown", Vanessa Kirby "The Crown", Storm Reid "The Last of Us", Nico Parker "The Last of Us", Carrie Preston "The Good Wife"

2023 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Comedy Categories

Best Comedy Series
Abbott Elementary
Barry
The Bear
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Only Murders in the Building
Poker Face
Ted Lasso
Wednesday

Other Contenders - What We Do in the Shadows, Shrinking, The Great, Atlanta, Somebody Somewhere, Dead to Me, Reservation Dogs, The Other Two, Jury Duty, Ghosts

Commentary - Six slots seem safe: Abbott, Barry, The Bear, Only Murders, Maisel, and Ted Lasso. The last two slots could be a combination of many different series. I am banking on the immense popularity and good showing in the winter precursors for Wednesday to carry over to the Emmys. It even managed a BAFTA nod for best foreign series, which is a coup. In the last slot, I had What We Do in the Shadows, as it continues to surprise with nominations. But I think this season was a big drop for them, and I think Peacock has done a great campaign for Poker Face. Peacock has yet to have a major breakthrough, and it may still be waiting after Tuesday. But I think Poker Face is their ticket into the Emmy race. Beyond those nine watch out for previous nominees Dead to Me and Atlanta, The Great (whose Emmy profile has been building in recent years), Apple's latest Shrinking (which is a major threat), Jury Duty, and some of my personal favorites, Somebody Somewhere, The Other Two, Reservation Dogs, and Ghosts.

Best Actor in a Comedy Series
Bill Hader "Barry"
Steve Martin "Only Murders in the Building"
Martin Short "Only Murders in the Building"
Jason Sudeikis "Ted Lasso"
Jeremy Allen White "The Bear"

Other Contenders - Nicholas Hoult "The Great", Donald Glover "Atlanta", Jason Segal "Shrinking", Bob Odenkirk "Lucky Hank"

Commentary - With only five slots, it seems kind of easy to predict this year's nominees. Hader, Short, Martin, and Sudeikis should all return, and The Bear is so popular that Jeremy Allen White feels like a lock. Watch out though for previous nominees Hoult and Glover, Jason Segal is Shrinking breaks through, and Bob Odenkirk.

Best Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate "Dead to Me"
Rachel Brosnahan "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Quinta Brunson "Abbott Elementary"
Natasha Lyonne "Poker Face"
Jenna Ortega "Wednesday"

Other Contenders - Elle Fanning "The Great", Selena Gomez "Only Murders in the Building", Bridget Everett "Somebody Somewhere",

Commentary - Unlike the guys, this category could easily have some fluctuation. I feel safe about Quinta Brunson and Rachel Brosnahan, and I am now feeling more secure about Christina Applegate. She is an Emmy favorite. The last two slots feel like they are in flux. They could return to Elle Fanning, or finally give Selena Gomez and Bridget Everett some love. But I am banking on two new favorites. Natasha Lyonne is a previous nominee in this category for Russian Doll, and I think Poker Face is going to breakthrough. Similar logic can be used for Jenna Ortega. If we are predicting Wednesday, then probably we should predict Globe winner and SAG nominee Ortega to benefit from the show's coattails.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Carrigan "Barry"
Brett Goldstein "Ted Lasso"
Ebon Moss-Bachrach "The Bear"
Nick Mohammad "Ted Lasso"
Tony Shalhoub "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Tyler James Williams "Abbott Elementary"
Henry Winkler "Barry"

Other Contenders - Bowen Yang "Saturday Night Live", Harrison Ford "Shrinking", Phil Dunster "Ted Lasso", Chris Perfetti "Abbott Elementary", Brian Tyree Henry "Atlanta", Kenan Thompson "Saturday Night Live", Brendan Hunt "Ted Lasso", Jeremy Swift "Ted Lasso", Toheeb Jimoh "Ted Lasso",

Commentary - These supporting categories have become unruly crapshoots at this point, with predictions almost always off the mark. I feel relatively safe about Carrigan, Goldstein, Shalhoub, Williams, and Winkler, leaving two slots that could be occupied by up to twelve contenders. I am going with Ebon Moss-Bachrach to ride the love of The Bear. I also think that Ted Lasso will get at least one more slot. Most folks think that Phil Dunster is getting in (as he should), but voters are known to repeat. I think he gets beaten out by Nick Mohammad, who, along with Goldstein, has made the cut for both of the first two seasons. A lot of people have Harrison Ford making it for Shrinking. The show could breakthrough and he is Harrison Ford. But I feel like his name recognition is winning out in predictions, and I'm just not sold on it. Bowen Yang could also get back in for SNL, which almost always does well with these voters. Previous nominees including the other Ted Lasso guys, Brian Tyree Henry, and Kenan Thompson should not be forgotten, neither should Chris Perfetti, who I am really hoping sneaks in.

Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Alex Borstein "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Ayo Edebiri "The Bear"
Janelle James "Abbott Elementary"
Sheryl Lee Ralph "Abbott Elementary"
Juno Temple "Ted Lasso"
Hannah Waddingham "Ted Lasso"
Lisa Ann Walter "Abbott Elementary"

Other Contenders - Jessica Williams "Shrinking", Cecily Strong "Saturday Night Live", Sarah Goldberg "Barry", Molly Shannon "The Other Two", Zazie Beetz "Atlanta"

Commentary - This one feels less hectic, but that concerns me. Sometimes a seemingly quiet category can cause chaos. I feel pretty good about the return of Borstein, James, Ralph, Temple and Waddingham, which leaves two slots. The Bear's Ayo Edebiri feels strong, as the show is strong. In the last slot I could return Cecily Strong for her final season on SNL or Sarah Goldbeg and Zazie Beetz, both of whom made this category at one point, but dropped out. If Shrinking is strong, watch out for Jessica Williams, and Molly Shannon is a veteran favorite. But I am going with the great Lisa Ann Walter, who I think has more than earned the right to stand next to her two Abbott Elementary co-stars.

Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Luke Kirby "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Nathan Lane "Only Murders in the Building"
Steven Martin and Martin Short "Saturday Night Live"
Pedro Pascal "Saturday Night Live"
Oliver Platt "The Bear"
Sam Richardson "Ted Lasso"

Other Contenders - Leslie Odom Jr. "Abbott Elementary", Jon Bernthal "The Bear", Dave Chappelle "Saturday Night Live", Adrien Brody "Poker Face", Lil Rel Howery "Poker Face", Hank Azaria "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", Austin Butler "Saturday Night Live", Michael B. Jordan "Saturday Night Live"

Commentary - Let's start by saying this: No one knows who is getting nominated in these Guest categories. It is always a mystery, and there are at least three surprises in each category. With that being said, here I go trying to predict them. Last year's winner Nathan Lane should return, and SNL always takes a slot or two. This year, I think two slots go to Martin/Short and Pascal. Luke Kirby should return for Maisel, although his exclusion from an Emmy nod last year is concerning. Sam Richardson got in last year for Ted Lasso, and they love repeats. Finally, I am predicting Oliver Platt, a veteran with four Emmy nominations, will surprise. But watch out for Odom, Bernthal, Chappelle, Brody, Howery, perennial favorite Azaria, Butler, and Jordan.

Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Quinta Brunson "Saturday Night Live"
Taraji P. Henson "Abbott Elementary"
Cherry Jones "Poker Face"
Shirley MacLaine "Only Murders in the Building"
Sarah Niles "Ted Lasso",
Harriet Walter "Ted Lasso"

Other Contenders - Judith Light "Poker Face", Ayo Edebiri "Abbott Elementary", Becky Ann Baker "Ted Lasso", Jane Lynch "Only Murders in the Building", Hong Chau "Poker Face", Molly Shannon "Saturday Night Live", Aubrey Plaza "Saturday Night Live", Jenna Ortega "Saturday Night Live", Tina Fey "Only Murders in the Building", Catherine Zeta-Jones "Wednesday", Stephanie Hsu "Poker Face", Keke Palmer "Saturday Night Live", Chloe Sevigny "Poker Face"

Commentary - Again, SNL always gets a slot, and Quinta Brunson is a new Emmy favorite. Taraji P. Henson, a previous nominee, should get in for her scene-stealing turn in Abbott. Cherry Jones always gets nominations, and has kind of been dominate in these guest categories in the last decade plus. Sarah Niles was nominated in Supporting last year, and could return in Guest this year. Harriet Walter, I think will be a double nominee in two huge contenders this year, this time for Ted Lasso. Finally, I am banking on the legend that is Shirley MacLaine. But I am worried about Jane Lynch. Even though her presence was less this season, she is Jane Lynch. Ayo Edebiri, Jenna Ortega, and Aubrey Plaza could double dip, something that often happens. Finally watch out for Light, Baker, Chau, Shannon, Fey, Zeta-Jones, Hsu, Palmer, and Sevigny.

2023 Emmy Nomination Predictions: Variety and Reality

So, I am woefully behind on my nomination predictions. Stay tuned for the fast and furious predictions coming over the next 48 hours. I promise better coverage as we get closer to the actual ceremony. Let's start with some Variety and Reality Categories.

Best Competition Program
The Amazing Race
Nailed It
RuPaul's Drag Race
Top Chef
The Voice

Other Contenders - The Traitors, The Masked Singer, Survivor, Dancing With the Stars, American Ninja Warrior

Commentary - I would love to see The Traitors from Peacock breakthrough in these stale Reality categories. With Poker Face and The Traitors, I think Peacock is close to an Emmy breakthrough after they criminally ignored Girls5Eva. But these voters often take a couple years to change (although Lizzo's big win last year gives me hope that I am wrong). I am sticking with past favorites The Amazing Race, Nailed It, Drag Race, Top Chef, and The Voice.

Best Reality Host
Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jonathan Van Ness "Queer Eye"
Nicole Byer "Nailed It"
Padma Lakshmi "Top Chef"
Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph "Baking It"
RuPaul "RuPaul's Drag Race"

Other Contenders - Alan Cumming "The Traitors", Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner, Robert Herjavec, Daymond John, Kevin O'Leary "Shark Tank", Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn "Making the Cut", Dan Levy "The Big Brunch"

Commentary - Five slots for six returning hosts. I think the star power of Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph (last year it was Amy with Nick Offerman), will overcome the Shark Tank hosts. The other four feel pretty safe. Also watch out for Alan Cumming, Klum and Gunn, and Dan Levy.

Best Variety Talk Series
Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Late Night with Seth Meyers
Late Show with Stephen Colbert
The Problem with John Stewart

Other Contenders - The Late Late Show with James Corden, RuPaul's Drag Race: Pit Stop, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Amber Ruffin Show, Real Time with Bill Maher

Commentary - These five feel pretty solid with John Oliver moving to the new category. But watch out for Bill Maher, RuPaul, James Corden, Jimmy Fallon, or Amber Ruffin to upset.

Best Variety Scripted Series
A Black Lady Sketch Show
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Saturday Night Live

Other Contenders - History of the World Part II, Inside Amy Schumer

Commentary - At this point, why don't they just combine and have seven or eight nominees like Drama and Comedy Series. Duh on these three.
