Best Variety Talk Series
Will Win - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Could Win - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Should Win - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Commentary - As I said in the writing prediction, variety series categories have little turnover. After such a fresh and exciting season, I think it is time for Trevor Noah's version of the Daily Show to get back into the winner's circle. But, my guess is that voters go for Oliver again.
Best Variety Sketch Series
Will Win - Saturday Night Live
Could Win - A Black Lady Sketch Show
Should Win - A Black Lady Sketch Show
Commentary - Saturday Night Live has now won this award several years in a row, and despite a decent season, I am ready for them to pass the torch to one of the best shows on television this year. A Black Lady Sketch Show was absolutely hilarious, groundbreaking, and a refreshing entry into the sketch comedy canon.
Will Win - Live In Front Of A Studio Audience: "All In The Family" And "Good Times"
Could Win - The 73rd Annual Tony Awards
Should Win - The 73rd Annual Tony Awards
Commentary - With so many awards shows in the mix, I feel like Live in Front of a Studio Audience will repeat in this category. It was not as well-received as the first incantation, but it is still clearly well-liked by Emmy voters. If anything does beat it, I would bet on the Tony Awards, which always do well in the Emmy voters.
Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)
Will Win - Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones
Could Win - John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch
Should Win - Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones
Commentary - With Chappelle having two nominations in this category, I a little weary that this is not a solid pick. Sticks & Stones is easily the best of the bunch, and has a lot of buzz. But if votes do split, I think the clever Sack Lunch Brunch will win John Mulaney another Emmy.
