The Oscar Narrative: Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Picture and Director

Best Picture
Belfast
CODA
Drive My Car
Dune
King Richard
Licorice Pizza
The Lost Daughter
The Power of the Dog
The Tragedy of Macbeth
West Side Story

Other Contenders - tick, tick...boom!, Nightmare Alley, No Time to Die, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Being the Ricardos, Don't Look Up, Parallel Mothers, Flee, Spencer, House of Gucci, Passing, House of Gucci

Commentary - I feel like eight contenders are solidifying, and in the previous years, that is probably where the Academy would cut it off. But we are moving back to ten nominees, so this race has a lot of wild cards. Belfast, King Richard, and CODA are the feel-good favorites. Dune, The Power of the Dog, Licorice Pizza, and The Tragedy of Macbeth feel like the directorial, visual films, and West Side Story is doing incredibly well. Those last two slots are interesting. Right now I have The Lost Daughter. It has done well and has Netflix behind it. Drive My Car is the film that is just climbing up the critical charts. Foreign films have done better in recent years due to membership expansion. Will this one be as successful as Parasite and Roma? We'll have to see how the guilds respond. I want to put tick, tick...boom! in this race, but when I look through the categories, I don't have it popping up a lot. We all know that you have to have good support throughout the branches to stay in the running. That's why I keep thinking that Don't Look Up and Nightmare Alley will rebound. I could see a lot of the Academy's branches going for it in a big way. Being the Ricardos, House of Gucci, and Spencer will do well in other categories, so they cannot be ignored. Flee and Parallel Mothers should be in the running, as should Passing. Finally, the big blockbusters No Time to Die and Spider-Ma: No Way Home are both planning a huge Oscar push to prove blockbusters are back. We'll see if the Academy responds.

Best Director
Paul Thomas Anderson "Licorice Pizza"
Jane Campion "The Power of the Dog"
Ryûsuke Hamaguchi "Drive My Car"
Steven Spielberg "West Side Story"
Denis Villeneuve "Dune"

Other Contenders - Kenneth Branagh "Belfast", Adam McKay "Don't Look Up", Reinaldo Marcus Green "King Richard", Sian Heder "CODA", Guillermo Del Toro "Nightmare Alley", Lin-Manuel Miranda "tick, tick...boom!", Joel Coen "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Maggie Gyllenhaal "The Lost Daughter", Aaron Sorkin "Being the Ricardos", Pedro Almodovar "Parallel Mothers", Asghar Farhadi "A Hero"

Commentary - I know I'm crazy to move Kenneth Branagh out of the top five, and if he rebounds in terms of nominations, I will be happy to move him back in. But I have seen this scenario play out so many times. The feel-good favorite ends up being eliminated by the directors branch for a more visionary or for a foreign film director. I have just replaced him with Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, who is clearly on the rise for Drive My Car. The other four feel like stronger contenders across the board, and the type of films that the voters will love: Villenueve, Spielberg, Campion, and PTA. Adam McKay cannot be discounted, with two nominations in recent years. Green could ride King Richard's success, as could Sian Heder. Del Toro is a previous winner, Miranda brings joy, Coen is a previous winner, Gyllenhall knocks it out of the park on her first try, Sorkin is reeling from last year's snub, and Almodovar and Farhadi could find love in this branch.

The Oscar Narrative: Pre-Guild Nomination Predictions - Best Actor and Actress

Best Actor
Benedict Cumberbatch "The Power of the Dog"
Peter Dinklage "Cyrano"
Andrew Garfield "tick, tick...boom!"
Will Smith "King Richard"
Denzel Washington "The Tragedy of Macbeth"

Other Contenders - Nicholas Cage "Pig", Leonardo DiCaprio "Don't Look Up", Clifton Collins Jr. "Jockey", Cooper Hoffman "Licorice Pizza", Anthony Ramos "In the Heights", Javier Bardem "Being the Ricardos", Bradley Cooper "Nightmare Alley", Jude Hill "Belfast", Simon Rex "Red Rocket"

Commentary - This race feels like it has narrowed down to six, maybe DiCaprio is SAG goes for him as the seventh. My sixth slot right now is Nicholas Cage, who has done surprisingly well for Pig. It would be a fantastic nomination, but I'm not sure Oscar voters have seen the film, and he is up against some stiff competition. The most vulnerable is Peter Dinklage, mostly because Cyrano is not getting a lot of love outside of his performance. Cage could take his slot, especially if SAG goes for him. The other four slots feel solid: Smith, Washington, Cumberbatch, and Garfield. Collins, Hoffman, and Rex are hoping some indie spirit hits Oscar voters. Bardem and Cooper are Oscar favorites, Ramos is fantastic, and Jude Hill could be brought in if the Belfast love is strong.

Best Actress
Jessica Chastain "The Eyes of Tammy Faye"
Olivia Colman "The Lost Daughter"
Lady Gaga "House of Gucci"
Nicole Kidman "Being the Ricardos"
Kristen Stewart "Spencer"

Other Contenders - Alana Haim "Licorice Pizza", Rachel Zegler "West Side Story", Penelope Cruz "Parallel Mothers", Jennifer Lawrence "Don't Look Up", Frances McDormand "The Tragedy of Macbeth", Emilia Jones "CODA", Tessa Thompson "Passing", Jennifer Hudson "Respect"

Commentary - This race is confusing me, and making me second-guess myself. I have reverted back to old favorites over the two newcomers, because I think SAG may revert back as well. That leaves Rachel Zegler and Alana Haim on the outside looking in, despite both being critical favorites. Instead, I popped back in Jessica Chastain (who has done well on the circuit so far, despite the film's muted response), and Nicole Kidman (again, has done well despite the muted response). These two are both previous Oscar winners/nominees, are playing real people (which actors love), and again, I think they will come out on top with SAG voters, the most important precursor for the acting awards. Stewart, Colman, and Gaga feel like, as a of now, really strong. Beyond those seven contenders, never discount previous winners McDormand, Cruz, Lawrence and Hudson. Also, watch out for Tessa Thompson, who has been winning a lot of critical prizes, and her co-star Ruth Negga is also rising. Passing could end up being a bigger contender than previous thought.

FILM HERITAGE AWARDS:
1. Maya Cade for founding the Black Film Archive, which expands knowledge of and access to Black films made between 1915 and 1979, and includes her critical essays that define the project and consider the films in relation to each other and to the cinema overall.

2. The late Bertrand Tavernier and Peter Bogdanovich, distinguished critic-filmmakers who never lost their passion for other people’s movies and film history. Both crowned their careers with invaluable chronicles of their engagement with the cinema: Tavernier with the with the documentary “My Journey Through French Cinema” and the books “50 Years of American Cinema” and “American Friends,” and Bogdanovich with the books “Who the Devil Made It” and “Who the Hell’s In It.”

DEDICATIONS:
We dedicate this year’s awards to the memory of two esteemed colleagues and longtime members who are no longer with us. Morris Dickstein brought warmth, enthusiasm and prodigious analytic skills as a literary critic and cultural historian to writing about movies in journals like Dissent and Partisan Review and in books like “Dancing in the Dark: A Cultural History of the Great Depression.” Michael Wilmington wrote beautifully and passionately about cinema as a critic for many publications, including the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times, and co-authored the critical study “John Ford.” They will both be deeply missed.

We also dedicate our awards, with deepest appreciation and gratitude, to Liz Weis, who is stepping down after serving 47 years as Executive Director of the National Society of Film Critics. For her decades of extraordinary leadership and tireless service to the organization, we owe her an immeasurable debt.
